Everton’s fortunes have taken a drastic downturn as the club faces the looming threat of relegation following a severe setback. A substantial 10-point deduction, sanctioned by an independent commission for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, swiftly plummeted Everton to the 19th position in the league standings.
The Premier League’s statement outlined the imposition of the penalty, attributing it to a breach committed by the Toffees during the 2021-22 season. The club’s admission of breaching the PSRs (Profit and Sustainability Rules) for the relevant period led to a prolonged dispute over the extent of the breach. Subsequent to a five-day hearing, the commission determined Everton FC’s PSR calculation revealed a loss of £124.5 million, surpassing the £105 million threshold permitted under the rules. Consequently, the commission mandated a 10-point deduction as a sporting sanction, effective immediately.
Reacting to the severe penalty, Everton expressed profound shock and disappointment at the ruling and declared its intention to lodge an appeal. The deduction drastically dropped the club from 14th place in the Premier League standings, where they had accumulated 14 points, to a tie with Burnley, languishing at the bottom of the table.
Manager Sean Dyche’s team, despite a challenging start with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses, is currently on a three-match unbeaten streak. With 25 matches remaining in the Premier League season, Everton faces an uphill battle to recover from this setback, especially if the appeal doesn’t yield a favorable outcome.
A stalwart in the Premier League since its inception in the 1992-93 season, Everton has a proud history. The club’s highest finish was fourth place in 2004-05, and it notably secured a top-10 finish in the 2020-21 season. Everton’s presence in the English top tier has remained unbroken since 1954.
In their upcoming fixture, Everton is scheduled to face Manchester United at Goodison Park on November 26th, striving to navigate through this challenging period and reclaim lost ground in the league standings.
