Bayern Munich Eyes Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips as January Transfer Target

Kalvin Phillips has suggested a potential departure from Manchester City during the January transfer window, with Bayern Munich expressing interest in the midfielder. Despite limited opportunities under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips made a surprising start for England in their 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying victory over Italy. His lack of regular playing time for City, limited to just three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, has prompted him to consider his future.

Acknowledging the importance of regular game time to maintain his spot in the England starting XI, Phillips revealed his intention to assess his options in the coming months.

“I understand the need to play and compete every weekend,” Phillips stated to reporters. “I’ll have to make a decision about my future in the next few months. Gareth Southgate emphasized the importance of playing games to keep my spot, and I agree with him.”

Reports indicate that Bayern Munich is eyeing Phillips and may make a January bid for the midfielder, who joined City in a £45 million ($55 million) move in July 2022. Thomas Tuchel, the Bayern coach, is reportedly interested in Phillips and could explore a short-term loan deal.

City, having considered selling Phillips in the summer, might be open to letting him go if a suitable offer comes in. Despite this uncertainty, Phillips will return to Manchester City following a successful international break, aiming to impress Guardiola in training ahead of their Premier League clash against Brighton on Saturday.
