Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has voiced his demand for a replay of last weekend’s match against Tottenham Hotspur. Klopp expressed his concerns after a disallowed goal, wrongly ruled offside by VAR during the 34th minute, potentially costing Liverpool the lead. Despite VAR officials later admitting their mistake, the match had already resumed, preventing the correction of the error. The English Premier League released audio confirming the error, acknowledging the significant human mistake in disallowing Luis Díaz’s goal. Klopp’s call for a replay stems from the unprecedented nature of the error, which occurred while Liverpool was already down to 10 men following Curtis Jones’ red card in the 26th minute. Although Klopp remains doubtful about the possibility of a replay, he stressed the need for fairness in the game.
With the red card and the disallowed goal deflating the Reds, Tottenham took advantage in the 36th minute, as Son Heung-min scored to give them a 1-0 lead.
Somewhat surprisingly, Liverpool struck back in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time with an equalizing goal by Cody Gakpo, giving them some momentum entering the second half.
Liverpool went down a second man in the 69th minute when Diogo Jota was red carded, and while they nearly made it to the finish line to secure a draw, a Joël Matip own goal in the 96th minute gave Tottenham the win.
