European Clubs Decline Loan Deal for Mason Greenwood as Manchester United Parts Ways

Brentford, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, and Roma have all supposedly turned down the opportunity to acquire Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United. The Red Devils recently announced their decision to part ways with the 21-year-old forward during the summer transfer window, following the conclusion of a lengthy internal investigation.

In February 2023, Greenwood was cleared to resume his professional career after charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault were dropped. Despite not having played since January 2022, he remains under contract with Old Trafford until 2025. United opted to move forward without him and invited potential suitors to express their interest before the September 1 transfer deadline.

Numerous European clubs were approached before a season-long loan deal was eventually sealed with La Liga’s Getafe.

According to reports from The Athletic, Premier League side Brentford rejected the opportunity to arrange an agreement, and German giants Dortmund did the same.

At one point, Roma was linked with interest, particularly as former United manager Jose Mourinho contemplated a reunion with Greenwood in Italy. However, both Roma and Serie A rivals AC Milan ultimately decided that a deal did not align with their best interests.

Lazio did attempt to arrange a loan package, but the Italian transfer window closed before a move could be finalized.

As a result, Greenwood is now bound for Spain, with reports suggesting that United will cover at least £50,000 of his £75,000-a-week salary. Additionally, they are providing a six-bedroom villa for the one-time England international and a private translator.

The Athletic also reveals that Greenwood’s loan deal with Getafe includes a break clause that can be activated in January if all parties agree that the transfer has not gone as anticipated. Such clauses are standard practice in loan agreements, and it remains uncertain when Greenwood will return to action or how he will adapt to playing outside of English football.
