Liverpool is reportedly gearing up to compete with Manchester City in their pursuit of West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd. Jurgen Klopp recognizes the necessity of strengthening his defensive lineup in 2024, especially with established center-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both reaching the age of 32. While Joe Gomez is only 26, he has struggled to prove his worth, and 24-year-old French international Ibrahima Konate has been plagued by injuries.
According to The Sun, Liverpool has turned its attention to West Ham’s standout player, Aguerd. The Moroccan international joined the English club for £30 million ($38 million) in the summer of 2022 and made an impression with 33 appearances, helping West Ham clinch the Europa Conference League title. Liverpool’s scouting team has reportedly assessed Aguerd as they seek to reinforce a critical area of their squad. What makes Aguerd an attractive prospect is his ample Premier League experience, making him a seamless fit for the Reds.
However, Klopp may encounter competition in the race to secure Aguerd’s signature. Premier League champions Manchester City are also interested, although Pep Guardiola’s need for a center-half is not as urgent, and they may choose to stay out of any potential bidding war.
