Liverpool’s Pursuit: Defensive Upgrades in the Pipeline

Liverpool’s interest in Piero Hincapie was confirmed by his agent, Manuel Sierra, who revealed that discussions with various clubs, including Liverpool, are ongoing. The Reds had initially looked for a left-footed defender during the summer transfer window, aiming to fine-tune their formation and provide more freedom to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Hincapie was a prime candidate for this role, as confirmed by his agent. Another contender for the position was Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, who was heavily linked with Liverpool at the time.

Sierra stated in an interview with Bolavip, “Liverpool were interested in him [Hincapie], but they opted to invest in the midfield at that time. Talks are ongoing for January, and multiple clubs are involved. The transfer fee is expected to be no less than 50 million.”

Looking at the broader context, Liverpool has been gradually reconstructing its team in recent seasons. In 2022, they welcomed Luis Diaz in January, followed by Darwin Nunez in the summer and Cody Gakpo in the winter of 2023, completing a minor overhaul in their attacking lineup. The summer of 2023 witnessed the arrival of four midfielders, coupled with the departures of established players such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner. Given this ongoing transformation, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Liverpool reinforcing their defense in the upcoming transfer windows.
